NOOK #2: STRUCTURAL INGENUITY: THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF INTERIORS
Wat doe je als een opdrachtgever beslist geen kolommen in het ontwerp wil, terwijl die onmisbaar zijn voor de draagconstructie van het gebouw? Architect Dirk Jan Postel stond voor een technisch dilemma bij Museum Voorlinden, maar dankzij zijn interesse in engineering vond hij een ingenieuze oplossing die uiteindelijk een verrijking bleek voor de beleving van het interieur.
In deze editie staan interieurs centraal waarin esthetiek en techniek elkaar versterken. Ontwerpen van interieurarchitecten die genieten van de uitdaging om materialen op onconventionele wijze en zo efficiënt mogelijk toe te passen, de zwaartekracht proberen te tarten en een gevoel van lichtheid weten te creëren in hun constructies.
In dit nummer belichten we ook een spraakmakende constructie waarin inclusiviteit de kern vormt: het Serpentine Paviljoen van Sumayya Vally. Dit paviljoen is opgebouwd uit architectonische fragmenten die hun oorsprong vinden in Londense migrantengemeenschappen, en resulteert in een sculpturale structuur waarin diverse culturen op krachtige wijze samenkomen.

What do you do when a client insists on not having columns in the design, even though they are essential for the building’s supporting structure? Architect Dirk Jan Postel faced a technical dilemma at Museum Voorlinden, but thanks to his interest in engineering, he found an ingenious solution that ultimately enriched the interior experience.
This edition focuses on interiors in which aesthetics and technology reinforce each other. Designs by interior architects who enjoy the challenge of using materials in unconventional ways and as efficiently as possible, defying gravity and creating a sense of lightness in their constructions.
This issue also highlights a high-profile construction in which inclusivity is central: the Serpentine Pavilion by Sumayya Vally. This pavilion is constructed from architectural fragments that originate in London’s migrant communities, resulting in a sculptural structure in which diverse cultures come together in a powerful way.
